Tall ships sail into Ventura County

Two historic tall ships, Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain, will visit Channel Islands Harbor during the 11th annual Tall Ships Tour, Feb. 5 to 13.

The tall ships will arrive late in the morning on Mon., Feb. 5 and will be docked at the Ventura County Harbor Department, 3900 Pelican Way. Free tours of the ships will be offered on Monday from 3 to 6 p.m.

Free guided public dockside tours will be offered on Feb. 6, 7, 9 and 13 from 4 to 5 p.m. On Sat., Feb. 10, public tours will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Donations will be accepted.

Dockside educational programs will be offered to fourth- through sixth-grade students on Feb. 6, 7, 8, 9, 12 and 13. The cost is $8. Threehour sailing tours for students are also available for $35.

The public can sail along with the crew on a threehour Battle Cannon Reenactment Sail on Feb. 10 and 11. The cost is $60 for adults; $50 for seniors age 62 and older, students ages 13 through 18 and active military; and $40 for children 12 and under. A threehour Adventure Training Sail, an interactive program for all ages, will be offered to the public from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sun., Feb. 11. The cost is $55 for adults, $45 for seniors, students and active military, and $40 for children.

The Hawaiian Chieftain is an authentic replica of an 18th century square-rigged ship built in the style of a 1790s trading vessel.

The Lady Washington is a 112foot brigantine, a replica of the first American ship to round Cape Horn.
