Emergency rescue teams get in practice for disaster
      The Camarillo Disaster Assistance Response Team recently hosted an Amtrak/Metrolink train disaster drill in Ventura. Other local DART groups, including the Thousand Oaks DART and the Sheriff's Explorers, participated in the drill.

Charges filed against pair in prescription drug sales
      Felony charges have been filed against Oxnard residents Emily Randles, 18, and Nicholas Loulan, 20, for allegedly selling drugs to a Camarillo teen. Both were arrested June 9 for alleged possession of prescription medication for sale.

Woman pleads no contest to embezzling
      Jessica Diane Stubblefield, 39, of Camarillo, pleaded no contest to embezzling nearly $3,000 from a foundation she formed for a 7year-old who had been diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2005. Stubblefield solicited funds from people under the pretext that she had formed the "Tommy for Life Foundation," claiming money collected would go to the child's family.

Meadowlarks cut over $240,000 in checks for area charities
      The Meadowlark Service League makes wishes come true. Shanna Wasson Taylor, executive director of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, said the group's $12,000 donation will help three Camarillo children living with lifethreatening illnesses to realize their dreams.

Garden nourishes seeds of peace, hope
      The seeds have already begun to sprout throughout the garden planted by the 12th class of the Ventura County Leadership Academy. The 22 graduates built a quarter-acre garden in hopes that Mother Nature's soothing qualities will help heal emotional scars of people living at the RAIN Project Transitional Living Center in Camarillo.

YMCA announces summer programs
      The Camarillo Family YMCA is offering summer programs for members and nonmembers. Day camps have been planned around a variety of activities and themes. Camps are offered at three sites in the area. New this year are Cooking Camp and Rockin' Robots and Aerodynamics Camp. The traditional and sports camps are divided by age, and provide activities and field trips.

Array of activities on Seabee Days agenda
      Seabee Days will take place Sat. and Sun., June 23 and 24 at the Naval Base Ventura County, Port Hueneme. Gates open at 9 a.m. Admission and parking are free. Enter at the Victoria Avenue or Patterson Road gates. Seabee Days will feature ship tours, children's activities, demonstrations of Seabee construction skills and equipment, and entertainment.

      The Camarillo Noontime Optimist Club meets every Monday at noon at Round Table Pizza on Arneill Road. Everyone is welcome. This month's meetings will feature Sil Orlando of the Optimist Youth Home on June 25. Other events include the Optimist International birthday on Thurs., June 21 and a concert in the park with the World Classic Rockers on Sat., June 23.

Aquatic center ready for tomorrow's grand opening
Pool features 65-foot waterslide
      The Pleasant Valley Aquatic Center will host a grand opening celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sat., June 16 at 1030 Temple Ave., Camarillo. In the morning, aquatic exercises will be demonstrated. The afternoon will include food, activities and booths with information on camps and swim instruction.

Deadline for Girl Scout Camp close
      The registration deadline for Girl Scout Safari Day Camp has been extended to June 30. Girl Scouts of Camarillo invite all girls entering grades one through six to a weeklong day camp from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mon. through Fri., Aug. 6 to 10 at a local site.

      While the Pleasant Valley School District is receiving applications for the interim superintendent, the board of trustees has asked the community to give input on leadership qualities and values important to the area. Principals and staff from the district provided their input to the board last week. E-mail responses to superintendent@pvsd.k12.ca.us by June 19.

'Lil' Abner' opens June 22
      The Camarillo Community Theatre will present the musical comedy "Li'l Abner," based on the comic strip by Andy Capp, Fri., June 22 through Sun., July 29 at 330 Skyway Drive, Camarillo, inside the airport. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and matinees at 2 p.m. Sundays.
