County, state to host job fair for veterans
      A "Hire a Hero, Hire a Vet" job fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thurs., May 17 at West Oxnard Job and Career Center, 635 S. Ventura Road, Oxnard. All job seekers are welcome to participate. The fair is intended as an opportunity for veterans who are looking for work to meet employers and find positions, according to organizers.

Toy plane may have sparked fire
      AIRCRAFT INCIDENT - Investigators from the Ventura County Fire Department said a downed remote control plane was the probable cause of a small brush fire near California State University at Channel Islands on Friday. The fire, which started around 3 p.m., burned less than an acre and was extinguished quickly by firefighters. No one was injured.

Campaign raises $32,000 for memorial
      Due to the generosity of Ventura County citizens, more than $32,000 was raised during the "Fill the Helmet" weekend last month. The donations will help build a memorial dedicated to local fallen firefighters at the Ventura County Government Center.

Resident wins $1,000 raffle
      Thousand Oaks Mayor Pro Tem Jacqui Irwin recently drew the first cash prize winner names in the raffle being conducted by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Conejo and Las Virgenes. The drawing was held at the clubs' Los Cerritos Middle School facility in Thousand Oaks.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo
Family activities in Santa Paula include trips on Fillmore and Western railroad
      Historic Downtown Santa Paul Merchants Association will present a variety of events to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Cruise Night will be from 5:30 p.m. to dusk tonight, Fri., May 4. Classic cars will cruise downtown Main Street. There will be music and food. The Fillmore and Western Railway will transport guests from Fillmore to Santa Paula on the Shake, Rattle and Rail train.

Nature's coiling creations
      CHARMED- Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency ranger supervisor Glen Kinney, a Camarillo resident, holds a gopher snake. The snake crossed a trail in front of a group of students during the Conejo Open Space Trails Education Days in Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks last week. Kinney said the snake, which had recently shed its skin, was about 2½ feet long and about 3 years old.

Former opera singer lights 100 candles
      CENTENARIAN- Wilbur Jewett, center, stands with more than 20 family members, spanning five generations, who came from all over the country to throw a big party for him at Park Place Village in Camarillo on Saturday. Jewett, who was an opera singer in the 1930s and served in the Navy in World War II, turned 100 last Friday.
