CONGRATS- The Camarillo Chamber of Commerce awarded clothing store owner and longtime Camarillo resident Bob Kildee, center, the Pillar of Our Community award last week. People well known to many Camarillo residents came out last week to honor longtime businessman Bob Kildee.

Kildee was presented the Pillar of Our Community award by the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce in a ceremony that took place in front of the chamber's Ventura Boulevard office on Thurs., April 12.

"I'm very grateful," Kildee said to a crowd of about five dozen people that included his five children and their families. "I'm grateful my grandchildren are here and my family. I have so many things to be thankful for."

Tom Kelley, the Chamber's president, said the ultimate award is given to those who've made an "extraordinary contribution in public service, benefiting the Camarillo community," and that Kildee completely fit that description.

Kildee, who has owned a men's clothing store in Camarillo for 53 years, is the Chamber's oldest active member and has served on the boards of several local service groups and clubs for several years. He was instrumental in founding the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District in 1962.

His son, Camarillo City Councilmember Kevin Kildee, said the family came to the area before there were any park facilities, and his father recognized the value they held for youth.

"He made a real concerted effort to build parks that young people could enjoy," Kildee said.

Maggie Kildee described her husband as a quiet and unassuming man who preferred to stay out of the limelight.

"I can tell you that the best thing that I ever did was to marry Bob. He's the best man," the former county supervisor said.

Stan Daily, another longtime Camarillo resident and the first recipient of the Pillar award, said he's known Bob Kildee since 1954. "He's probably one of the greatest friends I've had over all these years," Daily said
