YMCA to host open house tomorrow
      The Camarillo Family YMCA will host an open house tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at their recently opened facility at 3111 Village at the Park Drive. The afternoon will include a free day pass to try out the new gym. Group classes and free babysitting also will be offered.

Board to begin term on Saturday
      Peter Jamieson of Thousand Oaks has been elected and will be installed as master of Conejo Valley Masonic Lodge No. 807. Jamieson will be installed on Jan. 6 by David Doan, past grand master of Free and Accepted Masons of the state of California. This 46th annual installation will be conducted at the Conejo Valley Masonic Lodge, 2786 Crescent Way in Thousand Oaks.

Newcomers club to meet
      Camarillo Newcomers Club will meet on Thurs., Jan. 18 at the Sterling Hills Golf Club, 901 Sterling Hills Drive, Camarillo, with social hour and meeting at 11 a.m. and lunch at noon. Speaker Virginia Schmalenberger of Santa Barbara will present a talk and demonstration of musical instruments from around the world.

Freedom Park
      Mickey Mahan remembers when the federal government closed down the Oxnard Air Force Base in 1969 and later began doling out the land and buildings to local government, schools and community agencies. One of those agencies was her employer, the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District. From that land grant a collection of recreational facilities for the public, Freedom Park, was born.

Residents pitch in to help family
      When Dee Dee Woods saw a fellow co-worker in need of help, she took action. So did Dave Ormand. Separately, the two Camarillo residents were among the dozens of Chili's restaurant employees from Goleta to Los Angeles that dug into their pockets to make sure a single mother and her two young children enjoyed the holidays.
