Vocational service to host party

Vocational Skills Services Inc. will host a holiday party from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thurs., Dec. 14 at the Ventura County Unified School District's entertainment room at 5200 Valentine Road, Ventura. The party will include a traditional turkey dinner, music, dancing, presents and a visit from Mrs. Claus.

The Oxnard-based service provides nonprofit day care and job training for more than 100 adult clients challenged by mental retardation and autism.

Arlene Robinson, chief development officer, began seeking contributions last July from Ventura County organizations and individuals.

"My clients have worked so hard all year to learn fundamental life skills, all the while working at regular jobs throughout the community in such establishments as Applebee's, Big Lots, Boston Markets, Chai Thai, Chili's, Olas and Toys R Us," she said.

"Additionally, they contribute back to the community, volunteering in park and beach cleanups and sorting items at FOOD Share," she said. "They deserve a wonderful holiday celebration."

For many of the clients who live in the three group homes run by Vocational Skills Services, the 35member staff is their only family, making the holiday season especially challenging.

Robinson said, "We're just a small, mom-and-pop, nonprofit organization without the resources and outreach of a Red Cross or Salvation Army, but we're putting all our efforts and energies into making this a fantastic Christmas party for all of our clients."
