Police: buyers beware

The Camarillo Police Department has announced crime prevention and safety tips to keep in mind during the holidays.

•When shopping, hold on to your purse. Carry it close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Never leave it unattended. Wallets should be kept in an inside coat or front pants pocket.

•When loading purchases into your vehicle, put your purse in first, so it is not in the cart while your back is turned.

•Do not leave valuables inside your vehicle. Secure packages in your trunk or out of plain view, and always lock your vehicle.

•Be aware of your surroundings. Don't get so overloaded with packages that you can't see what is going on around you.

•Park in well-lit areas. When possible, shop with a friend.

•Only carry those credit cards, cash, etc. that you will need. Leave the rest in a safe place at home.

•If you will be away from home, make sure your house looks and sounds occupied. Put lights on an automatic timer and have a trusted neighbor pick up your newspapers and mail.

•Keep your doors and windows locked, and don't display gifts where they can be seen from the outside.

•If a stranger comes to your door, beware. Criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts. Don't ever let a stranger into your home. Many con artists take advantage of holiday generosity by going doortodoor. Ask for identification and get specifics on how and where the donations will be used.
