Agromin offers November gardening tips Flowers, vegetables and bulbs can still be planted in November, said experts at Agromin, a Camarillo-based manufacturer of premium soil products. As the sun moves lower in the sky, normally sunny areas become shaded and shaded areas receive sun. Avoid planting in shade and place spring bulbs and annuals in areas now exposed to sun. The area's mild climate allows for planting springblooming bulbs, cool season bedding annuals and cool season vegetables. Annuals such as sweet alyssum, fragrant Virginia stock, linaria and forget-me-not seed can be planted atop bulbs for a fuller look. Mulching plants will stop rainproducing mud from splashing onto plants. When digging in the garden after a rain, wait until the soil is dry enough to crumble when squeezed. Move plants that are not thriving or were planted in the wrong place. Because they are nearly dormant at this time of year, most plants will move easily and tolerate transplanting. Prepare for Santa Ana winds by staking younger trees and thinning larger ones so wind will blow through. To winterize lawns mow very short, sow grass seed and scatter a light covering of soil amendment and water to produce a green winter lawn. Overseed Bermuda lawns with annual rye to cover up brown. |
