Morgan recognized for his patriotism

Mayor Mike Morgan was recognized by the local chapter of the California Society of the Sons of the American Revolution at last week's city council meeting for his ongoing participation in the city's patriotic events that honor men and women in the military.

"He's shown unusual patriotism, for being what you might call a politician," said Gary Smith, a member of the Gen. George S. Patton Jr. chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The chapter represents western Los Angeles County and all of Ventura County.

"I was totally surprised by the award," Morgan said. The mayor said he first heard of the award when it was presented to him at the close of last Wednesday's meeting.

Smith said Morgan continues to help host the city's Flag Day ceremony and regularly attends Memorial Day and Veteran Day services.

The award, Smith said, is not given annually. It was awarded to Councilmember Charlotte Craven six years ago.

Although Morgan is not a member of the historical organization, his genealogy has been researched back to the 17th century, when his family arrived in Boston.

He said his family tree includes John Leverett, who became governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1673. Leverett's grandson, also named John Leverett, was the first nonsecular president of Harvard University in 1707.
