Taking their oath of office
      SWEARING IN- Camarillo City council members Jan McDonald, Charlotte Craven and Michael Morgan were sworn in Wednesday night for their new terms on the city council. The incumbents beat out two challengers, Bob Taylor and David Schlangen, in the November election to win back their seats. McDonald was elected mayor and Craven was elected vice mayor by their fellow council members.

City awards sewer review contract to Irvine company
      The Camarillo City Council voted 5-0 last week to okay a $671,000 contract withAKM Consulting Engineers for the Irvine-based company to assess the city's sewer system. The review, which will take nearly three years to complete, is intended to create a statemandated sewer system management plan that will be used by the city to ensure a healthy sewer system.

Holiday deadlines
      Deadlines for the Dec. 28 and 29 and Jan. 4 and 5 editions of the Acorn Newspapers will advance by 24 hours because of Christmas and New Year's Day. The deadline for real estate advertising will be noon Thurs., Dec. 21 for the Dec. 28 and 29 editions. That's also the deadline for letters to the editor and press releases.

Armed shoplifter sought by police
      Security officers at the Camarillo Target store tried to detain a man suspected of stealing clothing valued at less than $40 at about 1 p.m. Nov. 29. The officers said the man, who pulled out a knife, ran from them and escaped. According to the officers, he jumped into a light blue Honda that was waiting for him in the parking lot. Another male was driving the car.

Council votes to require fire sprinklers in all new buildings
      The Camarillo City Council last week voted 50 to adopt an amendment that will require installation of indoor fire sprinklers in the city's new homes and in any residence to which sizable additions have been made. Camarillo was one of the last cities in Ventura County to adopt the amendment to the county's list of building regulations required by the Ventura County Fire Department.

9/11 docudrama to be screened at CSUCI
      World Affairs Council of America-California Central Coast will present "(The path to) 'The Path to 9/11'" Fri., Jan. 19 in the new Science Center at California State University at Channel Islands. Hors d'oeuvres will be served at 6 p.m. and the presentation starts at 7.

Verizon donates $25K for books
      Telephone giant Verizon donated $25,000 to the Camarillo Library's "Next Chapter" fundraising campaign during last week's Camarillo City Council meeting at city hall. Gene Eng, a Verizon spokesman, presented Mayor Mike Morgan with the check that will be used to help stock the 65,000square-foot library expected to open by late February 2007.

      As workers put the final touches on Camarillo's $26 million, 65,000-square-foot library, the institution that's seen many dramatic changes over the years prepares for yet another transformation. For 32 years, the Camarillo branch of the Ventura County Library System has been housed in a 16,000squarefoot building at the corner of Ponderosa Drive and Eston Street.

Santa loves dogs, too
      PUPPIES FOR SANTA- Debbie Deery and Jim Riley of Camarillo have been bringing their dogs to Santa for their annual holiday picture at the Photo Shop in Camarillo for almost 20 years now. This year's participants, Lacey, top, Sam, left, and Billy were all rescued from shelters.

Vocational service to host party
      Vocational Skills Services Inc. will host a holiday party from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thurs., Dec. 14 at the Ventura County Unified School District's entertainment room at 5200 Valentine Road, Ventura. The party will include a traditional turkey dinner, music, dancing, presents and a visit from Mrs. Claus.
