ELA LINDSAY/Acorn Newspapers There’s a gem of a local bistro that pulls out all the stops when it comes to great food in a stylish, comfortable atmosphere. Safire American Bistro has been open for 10 years in Camarillo and is still going strong because owner Jim Foley has paid attention to the kinds of details that customers want.

As soon as you pass through the doors you are greeted by friendly, attentive staff members and a modern decor that Foley describes as San Francisco-style American bistro. The restaurant overlooks the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains and you can enjoy the view while dining inside or at one of Safire’s two outdoor seating areas.

It’s the kind of ambiance you’ll remember and that will draw you back time and time again. Foley had the establishment designed by Eddie Britton, known for doing the interiors of famous spots like the restaurant rocker Mick Fleetwood owns in Hawaii.

You can book Safire’s gorgeous back room for all kinds of special occasions, from pre- or post-wedding celebrations to family and office gatherings. Or plan to dine on one of the lovely patios; one even has a garden-style cabana.

Not only is the whole place beautiful, comfortable and open, Safire American Bistro definitely delivers quality when it comes to food. A restaurateur for over 40 years, Foley knows what he’s doing and aims to please.

He’s created a diverse American bistro menu that features delicious appetizers like premium crab cakes on a bed of flash-fried spinach. I could almost spend the rest of this article talking about the spinach alone—and I rarely, if ever, eat the stuff! Foley says he got the recipe in the 1980s from Oprah’s Winfrey’s restaurant in Chicago.

Safire’s family-friendly menu features fresh, homemade dishes that will delight all ages and palates. Choices include wood-fired pizza, bistro burgers, crocks of French onion soup with gratin of crusty bread and melted Gruyere, pan-seared polenta cakes and butternut squash ravioli with brown butter sauce, sage, diced tomato, leeks, baby spinach and Parmesan.

If you’re feeling in touch with your inner carnivore and want to dive into a great cut of grilled meat, I wholeheartedly recommend the 16-ounce bone-in rib-eye that’s been wet-aged for 28 days or the amazing fall-off-the-bone Hunan barbecue baby back ribs.

Seafood lovers won’t be disappointed either. Among the offerings is grilled barbecue Atlantic salmon topped with crispy onion rings, melted leeks, baby carrots, young spinach and smashed Yukon gold potatoes. It’s a customer favorite.

As a matter of fact, everything I tasted was delicious and all the dishes I saw go by my table looked equally scrumptious. Just bring your appetite with you and you’re sure to hit the jackpot.

If you’re a first-timer and unsure about what to order, try one of the combo specials on the summer menu that features steak plus your choice of snow or king crab, shrimp or lobster tail, starting at just $22.95.

If you come for Sunday brunch from 10: 30 a. m. to 2:30 p.m., you’ll get a complimentary mimosa or a glass of champagne. If you prefer, take advantage of Happy Hour all day on Sundays.
